ISBNcalc

ISBNcalc is a utility provided free-of-charge by Zeugma for the use of book publishers to calculate the check digits to appear at the end of ISBNs. Usually, a publisher is assigned a block of 10, 100 or 1000 numbers in the following form:

100 numbers, starting with 0 123456 01. Your first number is 0 123456 01 0.

The digit at the end, in this case a 0, is the check digit, calculated by means of an algorithm. This digit must be shown as part of the ISBN wherever the ISBN appears. Normally, you can work these out for yourself or pay for the complete list to be sent. ISBNcalc will work out the check digits for you, and present a list of complete numbers. For example, the first 10 numbers in the sequence suggested above would appear as follows:

012345601 0
012345602 9
012345603 7
012345604 5
012345605 3
012345606 1
012345607 X
012345608 8
012345609 6
012345610 X

To download ISBNcalc, click here: isbncalc.zip (7k). ISBNcalc requires Windows95 or higher.

You will also need the file MSVBVM50.DLL to be in your \WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder. It may well be there already - it appears to be included with Windows98, and many other programs use it and will install it when you install them on your PC. If you do not have this file, here it is (zipped): msvbvm50.zip (686k).
